Start an LLC in South Carolina
Last updated · 2 sources
Forming an LLC and getting a business license are two separate steps in South Carolina.
A South Carolina LLC is filed with the Secretary of State. It is not your business license: you still need a local license from each city or county where you work (look up the fee).
Do it yourself
File Articles of Organization online through the SC Secretary of State's Business Entities Online. Then get an EIN from the IRS (free) and register with SCDOR if you'll collect sales tax.
Or use a formation service
These companies file the paperwork and can act as your registered agent.
- ZenBusiness (partner link coming soon): LLC formation with optional registered agent and compliance reminders.
- Bizee (partner link coming soon): LLC formation with a free first year of registered agent service (check current terms on their site).
Compare current prices on each provider's site before you buy; we don't list prices here until we've checked them.
After you form the LLC
- Find your rate class (NAICS code) and estimate your local license fee.
- Apply for a license in every town or county where you'll do business.
- Renew by April 30 each year (most towns renew online at localblrenewal.com).
Frequently asked questions
Is an LLC the same as a business license in SC?
No. The LLC is filed with the Secretary of State. Each city or county where you do business issues its own business license, renewed every April 30.
Do you earn money from these links?
Yes, once our partner applications are approved. It never changes the fee data.
